Patios are usually designed to be placed in full sun. Not necessarily, in warmer areas, the heat of the midday sun, but enough sun to give you that good sense of relaxation and well being that we get when exposed to lots of vitamin D.

Awnings can be either permanent or retractable. Fixed mounted awnings stay in a single set direction all the time. Usually it’s some type of shading cloth bolted on a permanent metal frame. Quick and easy to store away, retractable awnings can be purchased in either electric or crank operated versions. In areas where the climate, home, or landscaping ideas where awnings must be dismantled and taken down before winter and set up again in spring, retractable awnings are quite handy.

A shade sail can be used as an alternative to installing a full awning. They are completely portable and moving and installing a sail at a new home is generally just the cost of new tension points.

Shade structures were once all made from canvas. These days however, there are a lot of different types of fabrics that are used for making shade cloth. Not just fancy garden decoration, these newer cloths are weather resistant which lessens the chances of sun or storm damage and gives them a much longer life. How tight the cloth is weaved determines the level of filtering. It also has a big impact on cost.
