Everyone in the family can enjoy a deck but just how child safe are they?
Your new deck needs to be child friendly and that can all be thought about in the planning stage of your project. It’s not hard to use some common sense when it comes to the safety of your family.
You will need a rail on your deck if you have babies and/or toddlers in your family. A fall can happen just from a few feet off the ground so that must be prevented. If you’re thinking of having stairs to and from your deck, be sure that a child safety gate can be placed at it for the protection of any children.
Be sure that when you’re picking up your decking materials that you select ones that are rounded and smooth to prevent any splinters in it. The deck will also need to be checked every so often to ensure there is no splintering that can cause damage to little (or big) feet.

Another precaution to take is protection from the sun. If you’ve got a lot of sun hitting the area of the deck, think about building some protection like an overhang or a canopy. This will block the sun from unnecessary sun exposure. Of course sunblock should also always be worn outsie.
Try to think like your child would. Does he/she liket to climb? Squeeze through little open spaces? Put this thought into your plan to have no temptations for climbing things and squeezing through wide slats on your railing. Make the slats very narrow to avoid any of these ideas getting in to their little heads.
The safety factor in building a deck is your first priority in planning. Your children need to be considered before anything else. Keep them safe and plan to build a deck that will be accident free for your whole famiy to enjoy.
